Devender Pal Singh Bhullar, who was deported from Germany on 19th Jan 1995, is languishing in Tihar Jail of Delhi since he was awarded death sentence on 25th Aug 2001. His case is a classic example of denial of Justice as he has been convicted just on the basis of his extra judicial confession, allegedly suffered by him under force and threat of the police, while he was in police custody. Even though Bhullar recanted from his so called extra judicial confession, however without any corroborative evidence he was convicted by the TADA court. In the Supreme Court of India, while hearing the appeal, 1 of the 3 judges who were hearing the appeal acquitted him of the charges, while the other 2 upheld the conviction.

Its travesty of justice that the 6 Sikhs, who have been accused of killing Swami Ramanand in Vienna, Austria are till date without effective defense. Another aspect which is also very alarming that the Vienna police has failed to identify the people who made the murderous assault on these youth and is only trying to charge these 6 people and not anyone from the side of the followers of Swami Ramanand.

Lawyers For Human Rights International (LFHRI) moves NHRC for whereabouts of illigally detained persons. Concerned at the picking up of over 150 persons by the Punjab and the Chandigarh police for questioning in the wake of the arrest of Jagtar Singh Hawara,
Lawyers for Human Rights International (LFHRI), today moved the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking status report about their whereabouts and protection of their lives and liberties.These persons were forcibly and illegally picked up by the police as per the information received by LFHRI. These persons had been picked up for interrogation without the knowledge of their relatives and they could be eliminated.

Punjab gets rap for ‘ignoring’ juvenile justice

A seminar was organised by the Monitoring Committee on Juvenile Justice of the High Court. Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur in the seminar said the Punjab government has not met several statutory requirements of the Act. “A basic body like the child welfare committee is missing from most districts, no inspection committee has been set up to monitor the working of children’s homes and there is no shelter home in the state,” he said.

The Indian Constitution protects the right to life enshrined in Article 21, but for long the death penalty is being awarded by the Law courts unaware of the trauma and mental torture every awardee undergoes till he is executed.
Even Section 302 of Indian Penal Code provides for punishment upto death to the convict. In 1999 the Union government proposed for extending the death penalty for the crime of rape--- a proposal that drew country wide criticism.

A special Commission is hearing the case of mass creminations by the Punjab Police in the districts of Amritsar, Majitha and Tarn Tarn.
