CAMPAIGN AGAINST DEATH PENALTY

Our organisation has joined hands with various human rights organisations of India who are propagating the abolition of death penalty from Indian Laws. Our organisation is a member of National Campaign to Abolish Death Penalty, which has its Head Office at Chennai A team of members of our organisation had participated in the first meeting of the Campaign held in New Delhi in 2000. Navkiran Singh, General Secretary of our organisation read a paper seeking abolition of death penalty from the statutes which was widely appreciated. Another paper was presented by him in a National Conference against Security Legislations held in March 2003 in Hyderabad where he challenged the vires of POTA in the context of death penalty being provided as punishment.

Our organisation has also demanded the commutation of death sentence awarded to a sikh, Prof. Devender Pal Singh Bhullar by the trial court and confirmed by the Supreme Court of India in March, 2002. A small booklet on the subject has also been released by our organisation recently. A compilation of all the judgments pronounced by the law courts of India where death sentence has been awarded and where life imprisonment has been preferred than the death sentence has also been prepared by the organisation which will also be published in the near future. Research work and documentation of cases on the subject of death penalty at National and International level is also being carried on by a team of the members of the organisation. The organisation hopes to do a good deal of documentation on the subject in the time to come.

Our organisation is associated with different human rights organisations in India like Human Rights Law Network, People’s Union For Civil Liberties(PUCL), People’s Union For Democratic Rights (PUDR), Human Rights Trust etc.and International organisations like Amnesty International, Asia Watch, Human Rights Watch, Sikh Human Rights Group, National Campaign to abolish Death Penalty etc. and seriously making efforts to built an international movement seeking abolition of death penalty from all the statutues in the world.
